Regine Ramseier
Posted by Angie Lewin

The structure of dandelion seedheads has always fascinated me. But I think Regine Ramseier’s installation captures their delicate nature in a wonderful way.

My total lack of German means I can only enjoy the photographs and I just wish I’d a chance to see this piece in reality. I wonder how long it lasted? View further images

Emily Sutton
Posted by Simon Lewin

We head back south to Edinburgh on Friday for the opening of Emily Sutton's "People and Places" exhibition at The Scottish Gallery. Below are a few of our favourite images (we're now the proud owners of the first).

Mark Hearld has written a few words about the show which includes work based both in the UK and from trips to Europe...

"This collection of work sees Emily taking an up-close look at the high street in Italy and Portugal – a hat shop in Siena, a pair of stone lions in Lucca, a glove shop in Lisbon. Emily’s fascination with the visual particularity of each shop window or scene comes to life in a series of ink and watercolour drawings. Hand-lettered signage, architectural details, characters going about their daily lives are seen with a keen eye and expressed with a deft hand."

The exhibition runs at The Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ until 24th December 2011.

And all being well, you'll get a chance to see Deep Sea, our latest fabric by Emily - the follow up to her award winning Curiosity Shop.

The show features various new works by Perry alongside objects made by unknown men and women throughout history from the British Museum’s collection.

The exhibition runs until 19th February 2012. Booking recommended.

Here are a few snaps from outside the exhibition itself.

El Tren Fantasma
Posted by Simon Lewin

Chris Watson was a founding member of the influential Sheffield-based experimental music group Cabaret Voltaire but you'll now often come across his name within the credits of various natural history programmes on TV and radio.

'El Tren Fantasma', (The Ghost Train), is Chris Watson’s 4th solo album for Touch, and his first since Weather Report in 2003, which was named as one of the albums you should hear before you die in The Guardian.

Andrew Weatherall has reviewed Watson's latest recording over at Caught By The River...

"Trying to describe Watson’s work would be like sharing last night’s dreams and you don’t want to hear about my suppressed feelings of wistful romantic regret, fear of ageing [that's the teeth falling out one], fear of the future or be taken on my erotic flights of fancy. I’ll stick to a sonic description and let you dream your own dreams."

Read the review in full and purchase a copy from the Caught By The River online store.

And you can find out more about Chris Watson's work from his website.

Edward Burra
Posted by Simon Lewin

A new exhibition opens at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, West Sussex tonight, presenting the first major show for over 25 years of the work of Edward Burra (1905 – 1976), one of the most individual and celebrated British artists of the twentieth century.

The show will feature Burra’s iconic images of everyday people at leisure in bars and clubs, the black culture of 1930's Harlem, the sub-culture of harbours and ports, his macabre dancing skeletons and stunning late landscapes. The exhibition will also explore the influence of jazz music and cinema, and his forays into the darker sides of humanity.

Simon Martin, Head of Curatorial Services at Pallant House Gallery, and curator of the exhibition says: ‘Burra deserves to be considered as one of the greatest British artists of the twentieth century: utterly unique, and to be celebrated for his extraordinary individuality. It is a real coup for Pallant House Gallery not only to be introducing Burra’s work to a new generation of gallery visitors, but also to present recently rediscovered works to Burra’s many admirers.’

The exhibition runs from 22nd October 2011 until 19th February 2012 at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. For full details visit the gallery's website.

Simon Martin has also edited this forthcoming book on Burra's work, published for the exhibition.

Simon will also be contributing to our forthcoming journal, Random Spectacular.

Alex Malcolmson
Posted by Simon Lewin

You may have already seen the hanging sign that Alex Malcolmson created for his exhibition with us earlier this year.

Coast magazine have just featured Alex and his work in their November issue.

Alex has created two pieces based on his time in spent sailing round the Scilly Isles to accompany an article by Ceri Levy which will be appearing in our forthcoming Random Spectacular publication.

And in 2013 we'll be hosting an exhibition of Alex's work alongside printmaker & painters Jonathan Gibbs and Jonny Hannah. Sign up to our newsletter for details nearer the time.
